Programming Highlights: Informal Education
Informal Education can be described as spontaneous and participatory learning that takes place outside of the classroom. At this year's SXSW EDU, the Informal Education Track hosts an expansive list of workshops, meet ups, case studies, and more. Discover additional programming at SXSW EDU that encourages learning through engaging activities, locations, and conversations by checking out the sessions below.
The Dumpster Project: Inspiration as Education session will explore how to inspire creative action through informal education. During the hands-on workshop, speakers Amanda Masino (The Dumpster Project), Karen Magid (Huston-Tillotson University), and Leon Vanstone (The University of Texas at Austin) will demonstrate how curiosity motivates learning.
The SXSW EDU program hosts dialogue with education leaders dedicated to discovering new ways to engage students both inside and outside of the classroom. For more highlights, continue browsing informal education programming:
- Dance in Urban Education explores the impact of dance on the classroom. Panel speakers, Anthony Williams (Attack Theater), Mario Quinn Lyles (LevelUp Studios PGH), and Geneva Harvell (LevelUp Studios PGH) will discuss how dance and movement can be the solution to anxiety, stress, anger and depression amongst students in urban communities.
- The Playground Talk, Family Engagement in Hands On Learning will ask the question: How can we encourage family engagement in informal educational environments? Speaker, Tricia Edwards (Smithsonian's Lemelson Center For The Study of Invention And Innovation) will share practical takeaways and best practices.
- Speakers, Alexander Juhasz (EMMY Award-winning illustrator & animator) and Maria Laura Ruggiero (SeirenFilms) will offer a unique experience with their workshop How Dungeons & Dragons can save the world. This worldbuilding game session helps educators to understand, play and reflect over the power of storytelling.
In addition to the sessions highlighted above, the third annual Student Startup competition will take place Tuesday, March 6, at SXSW EDU 2018. The competition welcomes area high school students to submit an application to participate in the live pitch event. Finalists will compete in front of a panel of judges and live audience and the winner will take home a cash prize to fuel their startup vision.
