Watch the Five Most Popular SXSW EDU Videos from 2017 [VIDEO]

As SXSW EDU 2018 quickly approaches, we are taking a moment to look back at some of the most popular videos of 2017. From Brené Brown's talk on daring classrooms to Christopher Emdin's keynote connecting education and hip hop; it was an honor to host such inspiring speakers and thought-provoking conversations this past March in Austin.

1. Brené Brown: Daring Classrooms

We need to understand how scarcity affects the way we lead and teach, we have to engage with vulnerability and we need to learn how to recognize and combat shame. What would it mean for our schools and classrooms if we showed up for tough, honest conversations about what it takes to bring our best, most authentic selves to work?

2. Christopher Emdin: We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service

Drawing from themes in his New York Times Bestselling book, and the latest album from rap group A Tribe Called Quest, Emdin offers insight into the structures of contemporary schools, and highlights major issues like the absence of diversity among teachers, the ways educators of color are silenced in schools, the absence of student voice in designing teaching and learning, and a way forward in addressing these issues.

3. Tim Ferriss: The Secrets of Accelerated Learning & Mastery

In this talk, moderated by Charles Best, Founder and CEO of DonorsChoose.org, Ferriss will share frameworks and techniques that can help you take learning (and teaching) to the next level.

4. Sara Goldrick-Rab: Paying the Price

One of the most sustained and vigorous public debates today is about the value and crucially, the price of college. But an unspoken, outdated assumption underlies all side of this debate: If a young person works hard enough, they’ll be able to get a college degree and be on the path to a good life. That’s simply not true says sociologist Goldrick-Rab, one of the leading voices on issues of higher education today. In her book and research, she shows why in damning detail.

5. Andrew Smith Lewis: Learning, Memory & Knowledge Post-Google

In this talk, Andrew Smith Lewis looks at the science of memory and how technology is changing the cultural value of memory and knowledge. He’ll also explore the tradeoffs we may be making in the post-Google era as how we learn evolves.
