Developing Social Emotional Learning through Hip Hop, Community, and Mindfulness

SXSW EDU 2018 Session, Mindfulness and Student Voice Session by Kara Mosher

In our most recent news, we announced over 280 sessions spanning 17 program tracks, including social emotional learning.

With a dozen sessions on the SXSW EDU schedule discussing approaches to SEL, it is clear that stakeholders in education find this topic highly relevant today. SEL teachings can be utilized both inside and outside of the classroom and well into students' futures as adults. Core competencies of SEL include self-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. From strengthening peer relations to reducing school suspensions -- SEL studies have shown students improving both behaviorally and academically. These valuable skillsets imparted to students through SEL will assist them in problem-solving, teamwork, and so much more.

There are several aspects to SEL that will be explored this coming March with several focusing on mental health, mindfulness, and reducing student stress levels.

In the session, Integrating SEL into Data Systems for Improvement speakers will discuss how the 8 largest districts in California worked to implement and scale a new data system that measures student SEL, school culture/climate, academic performance and growth, and other metrics.

Write Your Life: Hip Hop and Mental Health is a hands-on session that uses hip hop and spoken word poetry to promote youth development and resiliency.

Two organizations on opposite sides of the country will discuss their shared principle that there's an irreplaceable benefit to students working face to face with the people in their communities in the Campfire session Face to Face: Connecting Community to Classroom.
