Black Owned: Freeing Black Minds with Education – An AFC Workshop
You’ve heard of supporting Black-owned businesses – coffee shops, bookshops, restaurants, or shops. But have you heard about Black-owned schools? There are hundreds of schools across the country curated by Black education entrepreneurs providing students a quality learning environment of their parents’ choice.
They are meeting real needs in the community. Only 15% of Black students nationwide are reading proficiently, and only 14% perform math proficiently. We must do better.
On March 8 at 2pm, join our workshop Black Owned: Freeing Black Minds with Education to learn how empowered educators founded schools that provide students with a rich education and brighter futures.
Key session takeaways:
- The history of Black owned schools: from enslavement, reconstruction, the civil rights movement, and Black nationalism to the present day
- Equity through education entrepreneurship: the most effective way to give Black students access to a quality education
- Learn from industry leaders – civil rights leaders who founded schools
Panelists:
- Denisha Merriweather – Founder of Black Minds Matter
- Dr. Howard Fuller – Former Marquette University Professor and Founder, Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy
- Dr. Steve Perry – educator, bestselling author, and the Founder and Head of Schools, Capital Preparatory Schools
- Janelle Wood – Founder/ CEO, Black Mother's Forum Microschool Network
