Explore LGBTQ+ Programming for SXSW EDU 2023
SXSW EDU has always strived to be a place that uplifts the LGBTQ+ community, and the 2023 event is no different. Queer leaders and advocates will be taking the stage to share their experiences, offer solutions, and provide one-on-one mentorship across issues ranging from student data privacy to inclusion in the classroom.

Meet Up
Kitchen Convos: Creating Trans Inclusive Spaces | Explore how to support transgender students in and outside of school via interactive groups with the Transgender Education Network of Texas. Educators have the opportunity to be that accepting adult and create an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, especially LGBTQ+ youth. Let us dive deep into how to have an open conversation about pronouns, the importance of autonomy for youth in their coming out process, and how to advocate for an inclusive environment in the classroom.
Talk
Counteracting Book Bans Through Libraries (CPE Credit) | Access to knowledge is essential for the maintenance of a democratic society. Providing this access equitably is the core service libraries provide. Works by and about Black, brown, and LGBTQIA+ authors are being removed from library bookshelves. This session will convene a group of library leaders to look at what is causing this push, how libraries are responding, and how educators, librarians, and community leaders together can ensure libraries remain spaces for people to engage with knowledge.
Workshop
Pronouns & LGBTQ+ Inclusion in the Classroom (CPE Credit) | The topic of “pronouns'' has gained significant traction in the last decade. But why are pronouns important? How do you get into the habit of gender-neutral language? How are LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, etc) youth spearheading the evolution of pronouns, neopronouns, and gender creativity? And, how do we acknowledge gender diversity in the classroom? Join It Gets Better’s Education Coordinator for a conversation all about pronouns, featuring stories from LGBTQ+ youth!
Student Responses to Cultural Humility Training | Cultural humility training has the potential to be one of the most effective multicultural teaching strategies. In this interactive session, I would like to explore five years of insightful student responses to cultural humility curriculum and strategize with participants about what can be learned from those student responses. Participants will discuss student responses to a variety of topics such as unethical medical research, racial oppression, health disparities, LGBTQIA+ issues, and more.
Taking LGBTQ Student Support to the Next Level (CPE Credit) | In our session, aiEDU's education team will lead participants through a collaborative workshop focused on developing curricula, instructional practices, and educational spaces that empower LGBTQ students. In pursuit of that goal, we will focus on three intersecting focus areas: creating safe environments, building visibility and relevance into content, and best practices for encouraging students' self-expression. Attendees will leave with strategies for supporting the LGBTQ students they reach.

Drag Story Hour: Fight For Queer Herstories (CPE Credit) | Non-profit programs like ours are under attack. Drag Story Hour uses drag as a traditional art form to promote literacy, teach about LGBTQ lives, and activate children's imaginations. This session demonstrates and shares the importance of LGBTQAI+ family programming and spreads our vision for a world in which every child can be safe fully expressing who they are.
Podcast
EWA Radio: Student Data Privacy as a Civil Rights Issue (CPE Credit) | Schools collect lots of information about students – health records, attendance, grades and disciplinary actions. Many parents aren't aware the data may be shared with others, including private companies or law enforcement, and even analyzed to identify and predict student behavior. Experts explain how some of these seemingly innocuous records have the potential to put students (particularly Black and Hispanic children, students with disabilities and LGBTQ+) on a different life trajectory.
Solo
Disrupting Censorship in Schools (CPE Credit) | It's true that teachers are being censored in schools in the wake of Don't Say Gay and Critical Race Theory legislation. But this is not just happening in red states: it's happening everywhere, sometimes in subtle and insidious ways. In this session, we will raise awareness about microaggressive policies that scare teachers into silence, as well as tangible strategies for disrupting censorship and staying out of trouble as much as possible.
